Hidden Gem & Underrated Games
Run out of ideas of what to play?
It happens to everyone, you have a long day at school or work, get home and sit down to play a game and then think, ‘I don’t have anything to play’ so here are some ideas for games you may not have played. I have played every game myself on the list below, and IMO (in my opinion) these are all definitely worth playing.
Make a wishlist of games on Steam that you are interested in buying. If you have notifications enabled then you will get emails when the games on your wishlist are on sale. Otherwise, whilst I don’t condone piracy, buying games that don’t offer demos to try is often a waste of money. If you don’t refund it for whatever reason, you will be paying for something you don’t actually want, which I feel has become a problem these days. Therefore, if you want to try a game not pirate a game before buying it then websites you might find games on are IGGGAMES as well as 1337X
Voidigo
Incredibly unique take on the 2D topdown roguelite shooter genre that is full of (odd) suprpises. Zany fun that is challenging with a ton of interesting weapons that you won’t find in other games.
Risk of Rain 2
Play it, really, one of the best value for money games ever created. The replayability value is amazing, lots of characters and tons of unlocks. Just one thing, you can’t save, which can be problematic as runs can take over an hour. Also, don’t worry if you haven’t played first game, neither did I and it really made no difference.
No Man’s Sky
Always wanted to fly spaceships? Have dreams of building space bases and exploring planets? This is the best game for doing just that and comparatively obliterates Starfield in terms of creating a ‘space exploration game’. Note that Starfield was created many years later by a much larger company with a huge budget and No Man’s Sky was made by a small company called Hello Games, whom you probably have never heard of. Note that if you have Game Pass then it is available on the service at the time of writing.
A subscription service by Microsoft for video games like Netflix that is available on PC as well as Xbox. It is a cheap and easy way to acces a lot of games with regular new additions - find out more at Xbox.com
Shogun Showdown
Similar to a kind of chess with ninjas, weapons and power ups. At first glance you might think it looks incredibly simple however it takes a bit of skill to master. Want to try before you buy? There is a free demo available on Steam.
Alina of the Arena
Turn-based arena combat, quite unique with many characters to unlock. Great if you don’t like fast-paced games that require your full attention. Want to try before you buy? There is a free demo available on Steam.
Doomsday Hunters
Another rather weird roguelite shooter that is pretty much unique, this time isometric. Lots of unlocks, guns and options to mess around with and an interesting cartoon pixel art style.
Tiny Rogues
Single room 2D dungeons with simple graphics might not seem like fun at first glance however appearances can be deceiving. With a lot more depth, loot and things to find than you would think, definitely worth a few hours.
Core Keeper
If grinding Minecraft style in 2D sounds fun then definetely worth trying, explore, mine, craft and fight underground.
Noita
Another unique take on the roguelike genre, this time as a sidescrolling/platformer type shooter where you use wands. The fun lies in the ability to customise the wands to create unique weapons though just be warned that it is a pretty difficult game.
Roguebook
If you like card based games and haven’t played it then definitely one of the better options. Explore a grid map with more freedom than many other games in the genre.
Inscryption
Another excellent card game with a slightly dark twist, some may find it difficult however once you understand the gameplay mechanic then definitely worth the time.
